What Is Alcohol and Substance Abuse Disorder?

Alcohol and substance abuse, or substance use disorder, is the inability to stop using alcohol or other substances despite negative consequences. It’s a mental health condition that can be mild, moderate, or severe, but with proper support, you can get your substance use disorder under control.

Symptoms can range from mild to severe. They may grow over time, going from hardly noticeable to eventually creating serious problems or quickly becoming severe. You may have an alcohol or drug abuse problem if you:

  • Feel you have to use drugs or alcohol every day or even multiple times a day
  • Need to increase the amount of drugs or alcohol you use to get the same effect
  • Spend money on alcohol or drugs even when you can’t afford it
  • Are unable to meet your family or work responsibilities due to your alcohol or drug use
