Genetic Testing for Medication Management Services in Seattle and Washington State

Welcome to Owens Mental Health, a mental health service offering in-person and telehealth sessions for patients throughout Seattle and Washington State. Our genetic testing services can identify the psychiatric medications that are a better fit for you, so you can live a healthier, happier life.

What Is Pharmacogenomic Testing (Genetic Testing) in Seattle?

No two people are the same (except for twins), which means everyone experiences life a little differently, including how your body processes medications. While all medications have prescription and dosing guidelines, the fact is, no two people absorb and process them the same way.

Your genetic variants may mean your body can’t absorb certain medications the right way or at all. When that happens, it may not work as expected, leaving you disappointed and struggling to find answers.

Pharmacogenomic testing (also called pharmacogenetics) can help you understand how you will likely respond to certain medications, including mental health medications. The results can help your healthcare provider match you with the mental health treatment and medications that are more likely to be effective for you.

Why Choose Owens Mental Health for Genetic Testing for Mental Health Medications?

No matter which part of Washington or Seattle you live in, Owens Mental Health makes accessing treatment easy. In-person and telehealth treatment options give you the freedom and flexibility to meet with a caring, compassionate mental health professional in the office or from the comfort and privacy of your own home — even when you’re looking for pharmacogenomic testing.

Note

Washington State mandates some in-person appointments for patients taking a controlled substance. We will discuss this during your sessions.

Owens Mental Health uses Genesight for all of our genetic testing. Genesight will send you a collection kit to gather a DNA sample from the side of your cheek. Once you send the sample back to Genesight, they’ll process your test and send us your results outlining which psychiatric medications may be the best match for you. Together, we’ll create a personalized, tailored mental health treatment plan that will help you see results sooner rather than later.

We will:

  • Discuss your symptoms and learn more about your long-term goals
  • When indicated, prescribe medications that are more likely to work for you
  • Give you a referral to other providers when needed
  • Provide ongoing care and support to help you live a happier, healthier life

FAQs About Genetic Testing Services

What happens during my first appointment?

During your first appointment, we’ll discuss your symptoms, medical history, and current treatment plan. By the end of the appointment, you’ll know if Owens Mental Health is right for you and schedule follow-up appointments as necessary.

We can usually schedule a free, 15-minute consultation within one week and an intake within two weeks. Check our online scheduling system for availability.

Once Genesight has your sample, they usually have the results back to us within two days.

You’ll pay Genesight directly. The company will contact you for your insurance information or tell you what the out-of-pocket fee is.

You’ll meet with your provider every two to four weeks for medication management, depending on the specifics of your situation. Over time, you may only need an appointment every two to three months.

We generally recommend genetic testing if you’ve tried multiple psychiatric medications and either haven’t achieved the results you’re looking for or experienced intense side effects. It’s also useful for people who are exploring pharmacological options to support their mental health and want to know which medications to try and which to avoid.

Genetic testing is one of many tools we use to personalize your care plan. We work collaboratively and will always take your symptoms, history, and preferences into account.

Yes, as long as they aren’t worsening your condition. Let us know what medications you’re currently on and how well they’re working for you. After your first appointment, we’ll discuss continuing or changing your medications.

We accept most major insurance carriers, including Aetna, Blue Cross, Blue Shield, BlueCross Blue Shield, Cigna, First Choice, HMA, Kaiser HMO and PPO, Lifewise, Premera, Regence, Uniform/UMP.

If you don’t have insurance or would prefer to pay cash, we charge $300 for an intake appointment and between $100 and $150 for follow-ups. Learn more about insurance and billing.
