What Is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder, which used to be called manic depression, is a lifelong condition characterized by extreme mood swings. One side includes emotional highs, called mania or hypomania, and emotional lows, also known as depression.

When you’re in mania or hypomania, you may feel incredibly energetic and euphoric or unusually edgy and irritable. When you’re depressed, you may feel sad or hopeless and unable to find pleasure in most activities. Experiencing these mood swings can impact your:

  • Activity level
  • Behavior and interactions with others
  • Appetite
  • Judgments
  • Sleep patterns

An episode can last several days to weeks or months and may happen rarely or several times a year. Some people with bipolar disorder may swing from mania to depression, while others may experience mania and depression at the same time.
